Why do people get Dental Implants?
Why do people get Dental Implants?
We are all living longer today.

“Alexander the Great” conquered the world at 17 but the average life span then was 22years of age.

In 1965 the average life span was 65years in the Western World, and today, people are living well into their 80’s and 90’s.

For our parents and grandparents at 50years, “teeth in a glass by the bed” was the norm, and today more than 25% of our populations will be over 65years in the next decade.

For the Baby Boomer Generation, The concept of “Teeth in a jar by the bed” is abhorrent. And can be avoided  with today’s dental advancements.

Dental restorations like dentures and Bridges have been around for many years however they are not the most satisfactory solution.

Bone loss continues under dentures, adjoining teeth suffer from greater rates of loss from decay, and overloading. Bridges require the supporting teeth to be prepared for crowns causing 15% greater likelihood of Root canal treatments, fracture and eventual loss compared with virgin teeth.

Dental Implants offer the best solution to overcome these problems.

Dental implants maintain the bony base of the jaw and prevent the facial collapse seen in the elderly.  Adjacent teeth do not require restoration. This means less  dental decay, less endodontics, less porcelain and tooth fracture. They improve dental hygiene, chewing ability and appearance as well as reduce tooth loss overtime.
(30% tooth loss compared with 0.05% over 10 years.)

For people with their own teeth a biting force of 70psi for a front tooth , and 250psi for a molar tooth  is common whilst eating. Long term denture wearers routinely chew with 5-10 psi, so eating mush becomes the norm.  Denture stability is a great problem for denture wearers, so that as bony loss increases with time, movement of up to 1 cm is common for a lower denture.

Dental implants can stabilize these dentures and increase the biting forces to near the forces achieved by natural teeth.
